A PocketGuard alternative, when your bank is not in the US, Canada or the UK

PocketGuard works out how much you can safely spend from your connected accounts, and it connects to banks in three countries, so the right alternative depends on whether you are leaving over that number, the price or the map.

Stay with PocketGuard if you bank in the US, Canada or the UK and want one number that says what is safe to spend, worked out from your connected accounts, because Hundo has no bank connection and no number like that. Switch to Hundo if your bank is outside those three countries: PocketGuard connects only to banks there and points everyone else to adding accounts and transactions by hand, while Hundo is built around entries you make yourself, in 166 currencies, with a tracker that is free forever.

PocketGuard is a budgeting app whose best-known feature is a single figure. Many people still look for it as "In My Pocket". PocketGuard's own help article on it still sits at an address ending in IN-MY-POCKET, and is now titled "What Is Leftover in PocketGuard".

What is PocketGuard's Leftover number?Link to this section

PocketGuard's Leftover article calculates it as income minus expenses minus goals. It is the money left to spend or save after bills, budgets, goals and debt payments. PocketGuard works it out by analysing your connected accounts, and it resets at the start of each month.

That is a genuinely useful idea: one number instead of a page of categories. Hundo has nothing like it. Hundo budgets are monthly or weekly spending limits per category, filled automatically from the categories you choose.

If that single number is what you open PocketGuard for, and your bank is supported, stay.

Which countries does PocketGuard support?Link to this section

Three. PocketGuard's help article What countries does PocketGuard support? lists bank accounts and cards from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Its home page says it connects to "20,000+ institutions" across those countries, through Plaid, Finicity and Saltedge.

For Australia, Europe and Latin America, the same article says you can still use PocketGuard's web app "by adding your bank accounts and transactions manually".

That is an honest answer, and it is worth reading closely. Outside those three countries, you put every entry into PocketGuard yourself, so the question becomes which app makes that fastest. What to do when no app supports your country is the fuller answer.

PocketGuard's pricing page starts with a 7-day free trial and shows three paid options, all in US dollars:

  • $74.99 billed yearly, shown as $6.25 a month.
  • $12.99 a month.
  • $149.99 once, for a lifetime plan.

The pricing page shows no free plan.

The Hundo tracker is free forever, with nothing capped. Pro is pay what you want: $36 a year at the minimum, $72 suggested, or $8 a month, and new subscribers get a 7-day trial.

Does PocketGuard cancel subscriptions and lower bills?Link to this section

Partly, and the details matter.

PocketGuard finds recurring charges in your connected accounts. Its cancel subscriptions page says that to cancel one, "You need to head to each service's account and cancel a subscription directly there". Its lower your bills page says a partner, Billshark, negotiates cell phone, cable and WiFi bills, and takes a cut of the savings only if it succeeds.

If you want a team that cancels subscriptions for you, Rocket Money offers that in the United States. Hundo does neither: it does not cancel subscriptions or negotiate bills.

What makes an app without bank connections worth using?Link to this section

Hundo has no bank connection in any country, and it never asks for banking credentials. Why some people prefer it that way. That trade is only worth making if putting an entry in is fast, and if currencies are handled properly.

Getting entries in. Type the amount first and pick from suggestions ranked out of your own history, or import a CSV, TSV or Excel file with column mapping and duplicate detection. Both are free. In Pro you can also photograph a receipt, forward an email receipt, dictate, or tell the assistant what you spent and confirm its draft. How to keep tracking by hand after the novelty wears off covers the habit side.

Currencies, properly. Each account, asset and budget keeps its own currency, in 166 of them. Each transaction stores the exchange rate for its own date, so old months keep their old rates. Net worth reports in one base currency, and can split a change into the part that was your money and the part that was the exchange rate. Which exchange rate to record covers a card charge in another currency.

What do you give up by leaving PocketGuard for Hundo?Link to this section

  • Connected accounts, in the three countries PocketGuard supports. Nothing appears in Hundo by itself.
  • The Leftover number. Hundo has spending limits per category, not one safe-to-spend figure.
  • Bill negotiation through a partner. Hundo does not negotiate bills.
  • Native apps. PocketGuard lists web, iPhone, Apple Watch and Android. Hundo is a web app you install, with no app-store app.

What does Hundo give you instead?Link to this section

  • A tracker that is free forever, with nothing capped: unlimited accounts, transactions, budgets and assets.
  • No country list, because there is no bank connection to have one.
  • Every currency, with each account, asset and budget in its own. What a multi-currency net worth tracker has to get right.
  • Assets beyond cash. Crypto, stocks, funds and precious metals are priced automatically, you value property and vehicles yourself, and IOUs are tracked per person.
  • Your own AI, if you want one. Hundo publishes an MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT or another client can read your ledger and draft changes that are only written after you confirm. It is part of Pro. How to connect one.
