How does your net worth compare with others your age?

Put in your age and your net worth, and see where you sit against the median for households your age - from official surveys in the US, the UK, the euro area, Canada and Australia, each linked to its source.

Net worth is what you own - savings, investments, property - minus what you owe.

You are above the median for your age.

Median, aged 35-44
$135,600
Mean, aged 35-44
$549,600

Your net worth of $150,000 is above the median for US families aged 35-44 ($135,600 in 2022): about 11% more.

Why the median, not the average

Net worth is spread very unevenly, so the average says little about a typical household. For US families aged 35-44 in 2022, the mean was $549,600, while the median - the family in the middle - was $135,600. A small number of very wealthy families pull the mean up; the median is what a family in the middle actually has.

The shape is the same in all five surveys: net worth rises with age, peaks somewhere between 55 and 74, and is lower again in the oldest group.

The five surveys

Each figure is copied from the publisher’s own table. They were taken in different years and count different kinds of household, so compare yourself with the one for where you live.

United Kingdom (Great Britain)

Office for National Statistics, Wealth and Assets Survey, April 2020 to March 2022: households in Great Britain by age of the household head, in pounds at the time of the survey. Includes private pension wealth already built up, which the ONS counts as household wealth, so it runs higher than the other surveys. Euro area

Canada

Statistics Canada, Survey of Financial Security, 2023: Canadian families by age of the major income recipient, in 2023 dollars. Counts families and people not in a family together, as the source table does. Table 1, The Daily, 29 October 2024

Australia

Questions

What is a good net worth for my age?
There is no single good number. The median is the household in the middle of an age group: half have more and half have less. Being above it means you have more than half of the households your age in that survey. It says nothing about whether that is enough for your own plans.
Why is the average net worth so much higher than the median?
Because a small number of very wealthy households pull the average up. For US families aged 35-44 in 2022, the mean was $549,600 but the median was $135,600. The median, the household in the middle, is the better guide to what is typical.
Do these figures include property and pensions?
All five count property, savings and investments, less debts. The UK figure also includes private pension wealth already built up, because the ONS counts it as household wealth, so it runs higher than the others. The surveys differ in which other pension savings they count; each links to its source for the details.
Can I compare myself with another country, or use one if mine is not listed?
Only as a rough guide. The surveys were taken in different years, count different kinds of household and use different currencies, and the same amount does not buy the same in each country. They are the places whose statistics offices publish net worth by age that we could check at the source; if yours is not among them, none of them describes households where you live.
Is anything I type into the net worth by age tool sent anywhere?
No. The survey figures are built into the page, and the comparison runs in your browser. Your age and your net worth never leave it.
