One total, many currencies

If you earn in one currency, save in another and owe in a third, no single account statement tells you what you are worth. Adding the numbers up means converting each one into the currency you think in first - and converting at today’s rate, because the question is what everything is worth now.

That is also why a net worth held in several currencies moves on days you did nothing: the exchange rates moved. To see how much of an investment’s return was the investment and how much was the currency, use the currency-adjusted return calculator.

The worked example

You live in the euro area. You have €4,200 in a current account, £12,000 of savings in the UK and $30,000 in a US brokerage account, and you owe €8,500 on a car loan.

At the example rates, that is €43,946 you own and €8,500 you owe: a net worth of €35,446. The dollars are the largest part of it, which means the euro’s moves against the dollar move your total more than anything else.

How it is worked out

Each amount is converted into your currency, then everything you own is added up and everything you owe is taken off. The rates are one table based on the US dollar, so a pair like pounds to euros goes through the dollar:

in your currency = amount × (your currency per dollar ÷ its currency per dollar)

Questions

Which exchange rates does the net worth calculator use?
The same daily table Hundo uses for your accounts: rates from ExchangeRate-API, based on the US dollar, with any other pair worked out through the dollar. The provider updates them once a day, so the total is a snapshot of today, not a live market quote.
How do I put in a loan or a credit card balance?
Choose Owe on its line and type the amount you owe. It is taken off what you own. A minus sign in front of the amount means the same thing.
Should a net worth use today's exchange rate or the rate when I bought?
Today's. A net worth answers what everything is worth now, in the currency you would spend it in. The rate you bought at answers a different question - how much an investment actually earned you once the currency moved - and that is what the currency-adjusted return calculator is for.
Is anything I type into the net worth calculator sent anywhere?
No. The page downloads the day's exchange rates from Hundo once, then adds everything up in your browser. The amounts, labels and currencies you type never leave it.
