A Quicken Simplifi alternative, for money outside the US and Canada
Quicken Simplifi connects to US and Canadian accounts, tracks USD or CAD one currency at a time and has no free trial, so the right alternative depends on whether you are leaving over the subscription, the map or the currencies.
Stay with Quicken Simplifi if you live in the US or Canada, keep your money in one of those two currencies, and want connected accounts with a Spending Plan that adjusts as you spend, because Hundo has no bank connection at all. Switch to Hundo if you live anywhere else or hold more than one currency: Simplifi connects only to US and Canadian accounts and tracks USD or CAD one currency at a time, while Hundo has no country list, 166 currencies and a tracker that is free forever.
Quicken Simplifi is Quicken's web and mobile app, and a separate product from Quicken Classic. It is a connected budgeting app with a thoughtful idea at its centre, the Spending Plan.
If you are looking for an alternative, it is usually the subscription, the two-country map or the currencies. For some readers the right answer is to stay, so that part comes first.
What is Simplifi's Spending Plan?Link to this section
Quicken's Simplifi product page says Simplifi "starts with your monthly income, subtracts your bills & subscriptions, and generates a personalized Spending Plan that adjusts automatically as you spend". It says the tools can accommodate "zero-based budgeting, envelope budgeting, 50-30-20, and more".
Around that plan sit projected cash flow, savings goals, investment tools and a retirement planner, fed by connections to "over 14k financial institutions".
Hundo's budgets are a simpler shape. They are monthly or weekly spending limits per category, filled automatically from the categories you choose. If a plan that recalculates from your connected accounts is what you open Simplifi for, stay with Simplifi.
How much does Quicken Simplifi cost?Link to this section
The product page shows Simplifi at $6.99 a month, billed annually.
Simplifi's help article Quicken Simplifi Subscription Questions adds the parts that are easy to miss:
- "Currently, only annual plans are available."
- Renewals are charged at the full standard price.
- "While we do not offer a free trial, we do offer a 30-day money-back guarantee from your original purchase date."
- "Without an active subscription, users cannot view their data, add new transactions, or use advanced features."
The last point is worth weighing before you put years of history anywhere.
The Hundo tracker is free forever, with nothing capped, so your records do not depend on a subscription. Pro is pay what you want: $36 a year at the minimum, $72 suggested, or $8 a month, and new subscribers get a 7-day trial.
Does Quicken Simplifi work outside the US and Canada?Link to this section
No. The subscription article says "Quicken Simplifi can be used anywhere in the U.S. and Canada", and warns that you may have trouble signing in while travelling outside those countries or when using a VPN. Quicken's product page puts it more broadly: "Quicken products are not designed to function outside the U.S. and Canada."
If you live anywhere else, what to do when no app supports your country is the fuller answer.
Can Quicken Simplifi track more than one currency?Link to this section
Not at the same time. Simplifi's help article What Currencies Does Quicken Simplifi Support? says it "only supports the United States and Canadian dollar at this time", and adds:
Quicken Simplifi will only support one currency at a time. Adding a U.S bank account and a Canadian bank account or adding an account with both currency types may cause balance discrepancies.
So even a US account and a Canadian account side by side is a case the article warns about.
Hundo was built for mixed currencies. Each account, asset and budget keeps its own currency, in 166 of them. Each transaction stores the exchange rate for its own date, so old months keep their old rates. Net worth reports in one base currency, and can split a change into the part that was your money and the part that was the exchange rate. What a multi-currency net worth tracker has to get right goes further, and which exchange rate to record covers a card charge in another currency.
How do entries get into Hundo without a bank connection?Link to this section
Hundo has no bank connection in any country, and it never asks for banking credentials. Why some people prefer it that way.
- Type the amount first, and pick from suggestions ranked out of your own history.
- Import a CSV, TSV or Excel file, with column mapping and duplicate detection.
- In Pro, photograph a receipt, forward an email receipt, dictate, or let the assistant draft the entry for you to confirm.
Typing and file import are free. How to keep tracking by hand after the novelty wears off covers the habit side.
What do you give up by leaving Simplifi for Hundo?Link to this section
- Connected accounts. Nothing appears in Hundo by itself. You type it or import it.
- The Spending Plan and the projections. Simplifi's plan adjusts as you spend, and it projects cash flow. Hundo's budgets are spending limits per category.
- Space Sharing. Simplifi lets you share access to your finances with one other person in each space. Hundo does not share a household budget between users.
What does Hundo give you instead?Link to this section
- A tracker that is free forever, with nothing capped: unlimited accounts, transactions, budgets and assets.
- No country list, because there is no bank connection to have one.
- Every currency, with each account, asset and budget in its own.
- Assets beyond cash. Crypto, stocks, funds and precious metals are priced automatically, you value property and vehicles yourself, and IOUs are tracked per person.
- Your own AI, from the client you already use. Simplifi has an AI chat of its own, and its help centre says no actions are taken without your review and approval. Hundo's assistant also drafts changes that are only written after you confirm, and Hundo publishes an MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT or another client can read your ledger too. Both are part of Pro. How to connect one.
